RESEARCH
For my Component 1 I would like to choose the "magazine path". The reason is because my time and equipment to make an awesome opening film is limited, even if it seems like I'm saying a Magazine should be easier for me, I know that even doing it would still be quite an adventure!
All magazines have their own house style (basically what the style is usually expressed in a specific magazine genre). Different genres of magazines has dissimilar ways of expressing the message through the printed media.
MAGAZINE COVER
OCFamily Magazine (Known as Orange County Family as well!) is one of the known magazines of the family genre.
About this cover, I've discovered that it's used different and unique (There's thick and thin) fonts for the text! The colour scheme's usually bright (not too bright of course) and natural looking (including clothes). Font gets bold when there's any cover lines that are meant to be the most helpful and or persuasive ones. It seems like the colour of the font compliments the model's/models' outfit/s and the background around!
The places that OCFamily usually take their covers are outside to fit in the idea that there's family activities and how fun and happy the families are! A majority of the OCFamily magazines have children as models. Related to the use of bigger text for some Cover Lines in the cover, the possibility of it being the main thing about the magazine is very much expected. The model is also showing the statement! The girl is wearing sunglasses (MODEL OF COVER) on a sunny day showing that she's chillin, and the text below her says "Have A Blast! 50 rockin summer activities..." with the expectation that summer tips are the important ones here! They also have health advice and suggestions of activities to try, on the magazine cover. Let's not forget the Selling Line is highlighted yellow there!
Parents Magazine is also similar to the OCFamily cover, but with slight differences.
The magazine has a more bold and "round" Masthead with the addition of being unique for the cover. Font also gets bold to persuade! The colour scheme is also as bright as OCFamily but they have a more "home-y scheme". The style of the magazine is known for its house-like covers, and they all give me an energetic and cosy vibe at the same time. The colour of the font is mainly black, possibly for the ability of your eyes to focus on the text as well. It may not match with the clothing of the models but the clothes match the background aesthetic!
The places of Parents magazine covers are usually in a plain background (just like the second imagine of the Real Simple Family cover) or some place with furniture to make the home-y scheme shine better!
The Parents magazines usually have a family group as models for the covers. In this cover, the models are a mother with her baby! (Tiny text under Masthead says that this is a real mother, Tamron Hall, with her child, Moses) In this one, it also has Cover Lines related to activities, but what is not the same is that the cover line with the bigger text "MOM BOSS ENERGY!" has a confidence boosted message under it, saying that "you've got this!".
Selling lines are the ones that express how this magazine can be useful to read.
CONTENT PAGE
Note : a department is a division.
Both are from different magazines but they somehow have a similar style with their content pages!
The format for both of these images is arranged with an image on the left to show importance, and text related to pages continued to the right and so on...
They both show that the content in their magazines are about the health of children. Once again, something bigger is more important! And for this context of the research, a bigger image of a photo the more important it is. As shown, with the first photo to have a baby girl while holding a toy happily; "12 special needs.." to let us understand that this child may be a special kid.
So as the second photo-- which features NAPA with a big image of two kids from 2001 that can give us the idea of how old this comic may possibly be.
The first example photo is taking their content more onto helping children with special needs and their futures with the aid of others. The other images below the biggest one has shown it to be about that too. The two fruits may represent the vitamins we consume and with the topic of "Teaching About Diversity".
To me personally, having children who require special support from others and is talked about in a magazine is very wholesome: It feels like it raises up the awareness of the help they need. The departments are also more to educational topics such as school news and advice about College! Therefore, based on my observations through this magazine content page, it is more to learning a group of other people and knowledgeable purposes.
The second photo is also about health as well but with a slight difference: Most of the content being said could be about entertainment. They've shown about NAPA rewards (Matching the big image), diabetics, departments relating to entertainment and parenting, and adverts.
The last similarity between them I am going to mention is that they show what's in their magazine cover at one corner of the content page! For the first one, it seems like they show it just to label the page numbers of cover lines, and the second one is to give credit for the photograph from their cover. They both have a similar purpose just to add more detail from the cover, making a connection!
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
These two double page spreads has gotten my attention because of how understanding it is to me.
The first one relates to an interview from a doctor named Dr. Dustine Rey. From the next page, you can see there is a lady in the photo which seems to be the same person from the name above.
It's more noticeable since the placement of her name is justified on the right, and the font for her name is bold and outlined red to show importance for this person. She is also wearing a flowered dress for the photo to show neatness, as well as the way she sits.
It is also written that this interview is about education! The texts on the left shows about four starter questions which she answers (favourite book, song, quote and inspiration). The rest of the text is her talking about being the founder of a preschool so afterwards, her talk related to education starts of with an open quotation mark and a very big capital letter in red and bold (possibly to mark where she says something about school in detail, where the reader could find easily.)
This interview could leave a positive impact on the preschool.
So the second image relates to taking care of a baby. This, specifically, shows that this may be a story and advice about the beginning of parenting since three of the images in the spread have a one month old baby there. The colour scheming is also slightly different, other than the first one. Instead of using red to bold in the first letter of the spread, they use yellow. Adding on, the first half of the spread has the big image of the baby. Background also being a light teal and white pattern (even the baby's clothing). Symbolism of colour wise, the teal and white may represent the calmness and purity of the baby.
With the mother lifting up the child in the other two photos, them being inside a home gives out the idea that the text may relate to taking care of a baby at home from the first half of the spread. It has even talked about the parts of depressions, and quotes from good people in the last bit of the page.
Genre
A genre is basically a style. Every genre is different and there are a bunch of them if wanting to show it through Magazines. They usually persuade with photos and texts that relate to that style of genre.
For this magazine component, I've decided to choose Family Magazine. Hearing out and seeing the bond of my family has inspired me to do something more simpler than just illustrating art as the main genre.
Through conveying how my family is at home and how to take care of each other is a wholesome idea right into mind.
Target Audience
A target audience is to reach out a group specifically. In this case, parents (young or old...mostly about 20-40), would most likely buy the magazine to feel inspired.
